Thank you for joining us today, Niels. Let's start by learning a bit more about you. How did your journey with 2theloo begin, and what attracted you to the role of New Business Manager?

It's a pleasure to be here. I joined the 2theloo family on November 15, 2023. What drew me to the role of New Business Manager was the exciting opportunity to commercialize new products and services within 2theloo, particularly the innovative access solutions we're introducing to the market.

That sounds fascinating. Can you tell us more about your responsibilities at 2theloo and the recent developments in the company?

Certainly. As the New Business Manager, my main responsibility is to market our new products and services commercially. Recently, we've expanded our offerings to include access solutions, and we're now deploying these solutions beyond our regular markets. This includes major tourist attractions and places with high footfall.

It seems like an exciting venture. What would you say is your biggest challenge in your current role?

The primary challenge is establishing "turnstile as a service" as a well-known concept in the access service market. It's about making our innovative solutions a recognized and sought-after choice for various locations.

Moving on to your achievements, what are you most proud of in your role at 2theloo?

I take immense pride in the fact that our team has successfully secured some fantastic collaborations at iconic locations across Europe in a relatively short period. Unfortunately, I can't share all the details just yet, but there's more to come soon.

De uitbating van de sanitaire voorzieningen in de stations Antwerpen-Centraal, Bergen, Brugge, Brussel-Centraal, Brussel-Noord, Brussel-Zuid, Charleroi-Centraal, Gent-Sint-Pieters, Kortrijk, Leuven, Luik-Guillemins, Mechelen, Namen en Ottignies zal voortaan worden toevertrouwd aan 2theloo, die over de ervaring en expertise beschikt in dit domein.

Dit partnerschap is een uitstekende gelegenheid om onze aanwezigheid in België te versterken en onze missie voort te zetten om schone, moderne en aangename toiletten te bieden op drukbezochte plaatsen zoals in treinstations en levendige stadswijken. We kijken uit naar de start van deze nieuwe samenwerking met de Belgische Spoorwegen.”

In de komende maanden zullen de sanitaire voorzieningen geleidelijk worden verbouwd, met gedeeltelijke of volledige renovaties. Er zullen ook nachttoiletten worden geïnstalleerd. Alle voorzieningen zullen toegankelijk zijn voor personen met een beperkte mobiliteit.

Dankzij deze nieuwe samenwerking kan NMBS haar reizigers een kwaliteitsservice bieden en hygiënische en moderne sanitaire voorzieningen garanderen.

Een praktische en professionele service voor de reizigers

Het nieuwe toiletconcept omvat ruimere openingstijden, een intercom die 24/24 beschikbaar is, personeel dat flexibel kan worden ingezet op basis van de drukte in het station (zoals bij evenementen), een grondige reiniging en tal van voorzieningen voor een praktische en comfortabele dienstverlening.

De toegang zal gratis zijn voor kinderen kleiner dan 1,20 meter. Andere reizigers betalen 1 euro en krijgen een kortingsbon die ze kunnen gebruiken in verschillende handelszaken in het station.

Met het nieuwe concept wordt tot 50% minder energie en water, 35% minder papier en 60% minder zeep verbruikt dan vandaag. De dienstverlener neemt ook maatregelen om de CO2-uitstoot te compenseren. Hierdoor zullen de sanitaire voorzieningen in deze veertien stations volledig CO2-neutraal zijn.

Zo zal er bijvoorbeeld gebruikgemaakt worden van systemen om water te doseren en te recycleren. Wanneer beschikbaar, zal er ook regenwater worden gebruikt. De dispensersystemen helpen het verbruik beperken, en de zeep en schoonmaakproducten zullen milieuvriendelijk zijn. Tot slot is bij het ontwerp ook aan de onderhoudsvriendelijkheid gedacht.

Bijzondere aandacht voor gezinnen en personen met beperkte mobiliteit

Personen met een handicap en gezinnen zullen kunnen rekenen op extra service en aandacht.

In de verschillende toiletten komt er een aparte ruimte met een kindertoilet, een microgolfoven, een ergonomische stoel om borst- of flesvoeding te geven en een luiertafel om baby’s te verschonen.

De sanitaire voorzieningen zullen ook worden aangepast voor personen met een beperkte mobiliteit, met aangepaste toiletten, meer ruimte, een schuifdeur, wastafels op de juiste hoogte en een alarmknop om hulp te vragen. Voor de inrichting zal gebruikgemaakt worden van contrasterende kleuren en er zullen geleidelijnen worden geplaatst voor slechtzienden en blinden.

As Chief Operating Officer of 2theloo, it is Wouter de Koning’s task to provide visitors with the ultimate toilet experience. And with the new toilet concept, things are heading in the right direction. The innovative facilities are maintenance-friendly, clean and provide peace of mind. Always with a smile!

2theloo has been around for a while now. Could you explain the evolution of the company?

Most people know 2theloo from the toilet shop on Amsterdam’s Kalverstraat, which we opened ten years ago. A somewhat garish concept with big visuals and with a strong focus on the experience. We have learned a lot from this. Building a solid toilet, keeping it operational for seven years and ensuring a pleasant experience is an art that we have mastered. The new concept is modular and slightly less striking in graphic design, but it remains a true experience!

The balance between a memorable customer experience and hygiene, easy maintenance and durability. The trade-off between these elements is made with every decision: a waterless urinal consumes the least water, but that smells less good and leads to blockages. In that case we give way to the experience. Another example is the durable hand dryer. As they are very unsanitary and noisy, we found a way to use single-folded paper towels in a smart way: people always take two, which means that they don’t have to be that thick – thus, less paper consumption. Also, we mix the soap with air and toilet paper goes per sheet.

What place does such a dull subject like operational excellence have within the 2theloo team?

Why dull? Comfort in the smallest room appeals to the imagination, because everyone goes to the toilet. And thinking every day as a team about how to improve a customer experience leads to interesting conversations. How much toilet paper is used, which cubicle fits our range of customers best, how long does an average toilet visit last. By having these conversations the experience comes to life!

As a result of our easy-to-operate approach we’ve noticed that are sites are easier to clean. We’ve connected the water tap to the wall, which prevents calcium deposits, and we’ve built a sink and a toilet without sealant seams and edges. When flushing, a vortex is created, which means less water and more power. And, very important, we ensure that defects are repaired quickly.

How does ‘the new way of working’ relate to operational excellence?

We believe that if you give people the responsibility, they’ll take it. At 2theloo, we have a lot of employees that work on the technical side and are on the road often. That requires flexibility from both sides.

Can you give a glimpse of what the future holds for 2theloo?

Our core business is now gas and train stations, and retail, but all places where many people are or pass by are options. I think it would be nice to deliver to airports, where hygiene and comfort of toilets sometimes leave something to be desired. That requires a different model, because asking for a contribution at the airport will be difficult. But we are always open to new collaborations!

Towards operational excellence in the smallest room

As part of the partnership, 2theloo will be opening 10 new locations in Germany, starting with the BREAK Autohöfe Hamburg Nordheide set to officially open at the 28th of September. The expansion will provide more enjoyable and high-quality public restrooms for Germans and visitors to the country.
